Can you remember the moment that you wanted to become a hairdresser?
When I moved to Los Angeles sight unseen fresh out of rural Illinois and moved into a punk house. I was doing kitchen hair on cute mohawked punkers and thought “how much fun is this?”
Why do you love working at the Glam and who is your ideal client?
I have worked at the Glam for 20+years and still like working in the mission with the artists and rocknrollers that are still here.
How would your friends & family describe you?
Arty. And hopefully kind.
What in the beauty industry inspires and motivates you?
Fashion! It’s a real fun time to be doing hair color these days, as the chemistry of the bright colors that are out has become so great.
In what ways do you inspire your clients, and how do you like to inspire them?
I like to ask them what they are excited about. What are they going out to see and do? What would they like to try? I try to inspire them by going to see art exhibits, live performances, making art and traveling.
What hobbies/passions do you have outside of hair?
I have a pretty serious art studio practice and have been working on an artist-in-residency at the Oakland Glama-Rama. I work mostly in glass and mosaic, but love to paint and draw as well. I also love long motorcycle rides, being in or around the ocean and just being outside.
What else do you want clients to know about yourself?
I enjoy what I do and have been doing this a long time. I like to make clients feel great about themselves and have a little levity.
“My hair goes from blah…to BAM!”
“Over the years I have sent many of my friends and clients to her and heard nothing but rave reviews! I’ve hired her to do hair and wigs for photoshoots and she went above and beyond expectations. To say that I would highly recommend Jen Hoffmann is a giant understatement!”
